In many ways, especially in the Church,
“light” holds positive associations,
and “darkness” often connotes something negative.
It’s true, that Jesus said
“I am the light of the world”—
but darkness also has a rich significance in Scripture.
Darkness is not always something to be feared:
it is also the place from which
refuge, revelation, restoration,
and even resurrection can be found.
As a result, this Lenten season,
let’s lean into the dark:
the darkness of night,
and the “dark nights” of our souls.
Who knows what new life we might discover!
